FSN founder & publisher, food safety attorney Bill Marler, connects this regulatory setback to a Cyclospora outbreak that began in mid-May 2026, arguing that had the rule been in place, contaminated lettuce could have been traced back to a single farm much faster rather than taking two months to identify the product.
Put the Food Traceability Rule into force. Leafy greens are on the Food Traceability List. The rule requires lot-level records at every critical tracking event and delivery of those records to FDA within twenty-four hours of a request. Its compliance date was Jan. 20, 2026.
